Why is coronavirus a pandemic,

Coronavirus, first detected in the city Wuhan of China, has spread to 119 countries and territories around the world.

It has infected 126,367 people and killed 4,633 globally as of Thursday UNB quoted worldometer as saying.

worldometer is run by an international team of researchers , and volunteers to make statistics available.

In the wake of the massive outbreak of coronavirus across the world, the World Health organization WHO on Wednesday declared it a pandemic.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, the number of cases outside China has increased 13 fold in two weeks, reports BBC.

He said he was  deeply concerned "by" alarming levels of inaction.

A pandemic is a disease that spreads in multiple ciuntries around the world at the same times.

Tedros said that calling the outbreak a pandemic did not mean the WHO was changing its advice about what countries should do.

He called on governments to chanhe the course of the outbreak by taking urgent and aggressive action.

Why is coronavirus a pandemic,

Several countries have demonstred that this can be suppressed and controlled, he said.

The challenge for many countries who are now dealing with large clusters or community transmission is  not whether they can do the same - it s whether they will.

Why are people easily confused by the words (pandemic) and (epidemic).

Although both these  - demic words are used for disease outbreaks, they are not the same.

The  similarity between the terms leads many people to use the words interchangeably or incorrectly.

The key difference, however, is about scale.

What is a pandemic?

compared to an epidemic, a pandemic is an epidemic that has spread over a much larger area, prevalent throughout an entire country, continent, or the whole world.

The extent and spread of coronavirus justifies (WHO) s categorising the disease as a pandemic and it needs to be dealt with accordingly.

What is an epidemic?

An epidemic is a  disease (affecting many persons at the same times, and spreading from person to person in a locality where the disease is not permanently prevalent.)

The World Health organization WHO further specifies epidemic as occurring at the level of  a region or community.
